Spiritual Oils
Spiritual oils are the staple of many witches, magicians, and conjure workers. Their versatility lends itself excellently to all manners of spellwork, and you will often see spiritual oils turn up in recipes for baths, washes, rituals, simple spells, charms, and most other magical applications. You may also see them recommended as anointing oils to apply to the pulse points or on strategic areas of the body to radiate their influence in your life as you go about your business.
Common ways you might see spiritual oils recommended include:
Applying spiritual oils to the pulse points: apply to the wrists, the inside of the elbows, the neck, the back of the knees, etc... to attract a specific influence, to modify your energy, or to ward against danger, the evil eye, or bad energy.
Applying spiritual oils in specific patterns: anoint the left palm from the tip of the middle finger towards the wrist with money oil; form a cross on the back of the neck with uncrossing oil; anoint the temples and running the fingers through the hair with crown of success oil; etc...
Fixing candles: dress candles with oils according to your goal to fine-tune your spellwork.
Feeding charms and talismans: anoint talismans, charms, and mojo bags periodically with an appropriate oil to keep them charged and working.
Fixing the home: dot the doorframes, mirrors, and walls with oils for protection, peace, or prosperity.
Crafting washes: add spiritual oils to floor wash or to personal baths to bring love, money, protection, or cleansing. For bringing in a condition, mop from the front to the back of the home, or wash upwards; for cleansing, mop from the back to the front of the home, or wash downwards.
Dressing petition papers and packets: apply spiritual oils to petition or prayer papers, or paper packets to empower them.
Sneak spiritual oils into self-care products: add a few drops of love-drawing oil to your perfume; put a few drops of domination oil in your cheating boyfriend's shampoo; add some protection oil to your daily lotion; etc...
Training cash for money magic: anoint bills and coins with money-drawing oil to make sure that money spent returns three, four, or five-fold.
Attuning to specific spirits: use oils dedicated to specific spirits to attune yourself to their energies and encourage their presence, guidance, and power.
How much oil should I use?
Oil lubricates, and allows our intentions to manifest with ease. Beyond practical considerations, how slick we make things also reflects the ease with which we bring our goals to term.
For fixing candles:
Taper candles — Taper candles should be dressed with enough oil that coarse salt and herbs stick to it with ease.
Figure candles — Figure candles are rarely dressed with herbs in the same way that taper candles are. The old school way is to pour an entire bottle of oil over it, but we prefer a more conservative approach in which a quarter, up to half of a bottle or so, is poured onto the candle from the wick down for positive workings and from the base up for negative workings.
7 Day or novena candles — These candles, along with jar candles, can be dressed in a few ways. Ideally, a screwdriver, skewer, key, or other sharp, pointy, solid tool is used to poke three to seven holes into the top of the candle. Enough oil is poured in to fill each hole and to have a one eighth of an inch or so layer of oil on top. Some folks prefer to add enough oil to cover the surface of the candle, without poking holes. The oil may be rubbed in clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on whether the working is positive or negative. Herbs are added sparsely so as to not create a fire hazard.
Double-Action candles — Double-Action candles are often dressed with more than one oil, in which case each oil should be applied liberally enough that herbs, powders, and larger dusts such as red brick dust or coarse salt are able to stick to their surface with ease, but without one oil running too much into the other. The trick lies in finding the right amount to make sure your candle is slick and sticky, but without the oil running off of it. Working the oil in until the wax melts a bit into it is a good way to do this, and a great time to work your intentions in.
For oil lamps:
A good rule of thumb for an oil lamp is to mix the oil in a 1:7 ratio, meaning that 1/8th of the oil volume is spiritual oil. If you have an 8oz lamp container, that would mean adding a 1oz bottle of spiritual oil and topping it off with your lamp oil. After that, the oil can be topped up with a small amount of spiritual oil and lamp oil as needed.
For doll babies, poppets, and the like:
Wax dolls — If your doll is made of wax, follow the same instructions as for candles. You can be more heavy-handed if the doll is set in a coffin or in a box.
Cloth dolls — Cloth dolls benefit from a healthy pour that allows the oil to penetrate to the center of the doll. If you are “feeding” the doll oils (such as shut-up oil or domination oil), holding the mouth of the bottle to the part of the doll you are targeting until the oil has soaked through is your best bet.
Clay dolls — Clay dolls can either be fashioned with your spiritual oil mixed in, in which case we recommend using it sparsely; a palm-full should be plenty for an average-sized doll. If you are dressing a clay doll that has dried but has not been bisque-fired, your best bet is to pour an appropriate amount of oil on the doll without rubbing it in. Unless that is part of your working, of course. If you are using a baked or bisque-fired clay doll, rub the oil in until the surface of the doll is well-saturated and has deepened in color.
For feeding bags, talismans, and hands:
Cloth or flannel bags — When feeding a cloth or flannel bag, opt for a palm-full of oil that is rubbed all over the hands and then massaged into the bag, “cleaning” your hands off with it. Any remainder can be rubbed into the skin, the back of the neck, the pulse points, etc… to strengthen your connection with the bag.
Ceramic talismans — Ceramic talismans should be anointed with oil until their surface is soaked and takes on a deeper shade.
Metal, plastic, and talismans of other materials — These should be dressed with just enough oil to make their surface shine.
For adding to baths, floor washes, and other liquids:
Baths — Baths benefit from a healthy pour of oil. A quarter to a half of a 1oz bottle is plenty.
Floor washes — We recommend adding a quick dab of oil along with a capful of your favorite cleaning agent (we are partial to Pine-Sol!), about a quarter of a bottle, to your floor washes for cleansing and peace. For washes which aim to draw things in, a quarter bottle in about 4 cups of wash does the trick.
Colognes — Adding spiritual oils to colognes is an old-school way of “fixing” your cologne. We recommend adding about a 1/4oz of oil to a 8oz bottle of cologne.
Lotions, shampoos, etc… — For a large bottle of shampoo, conditioner, or lotion, we recommend adding a 1/2oz of spiritual oil and giving everything a good mix.
Laundry — Add about a 1/4oz of spiritual oils to your laundry soap after measuring it for your load of laundry, mix, and add to your washing machine.
For the body:
Daily wear — For daily wear, applying a dab of spiritual oil to the pulse points two to three times a day is sufficient. Consider it a perfume oil.
Anointing the body for a specific purpose — If you are anointing the body for a specific purpose before going to an event, or meeting someone, etc… a liberal amount of oil should be rubbed in strategic areas. Treat it like a body oil more than a perfume.
Dressing the head — To dress the head, a palm-full of oil should be worked into the scalp, hair, temples, and back of the neck.
Where should I apply the oil?
We should be strategic in our application of oil when anointing the body. Each body part serves as a seat to different powers, and anointing the right area can help to properly channel the spiritual oil’s power.
The head — The crown and scalp are anointed when using oils for intuition, clarity, psychic vision, and inspiration. The forehead and temples are anointed when using oils such as crown of success, or other oils which bring favor and admiration.
The face — The eyes are anointed for psychic vision and spirit sight, the face is anointed for favor and beauty, and the lips are anointed for influence, domination with our words, and love.
The neck — The throat is anointed to enchant our words, while the back of the neck is anointed for protection and cleansing.
The chest — The chest is anointed for all matters of the heart, whether to bring love, courage, or intuition.
The stomach — The stomach is specifically anointed for power and for building spiritual strength.
The hands — The dominant hand is anointed for influence, power, and domination over others by applying oil away from the body. The non-dominant hand is anointed by stroking the oil towards the body to bring things in, especially money.
The loins — The loins are anointed for sex, fertility, love, and personal power.
The feet — The feet are anointed for opening roads, bringing opportunity, good luck, protection, and for prosperity.
Spiritual oils are many and varied, and each has its own specific use, means of application, and spirit. While the recommendations above are good, general advice, check out the product listings for our oils to find out more about their particular applications.
