Fixed Star Alcyone Oil Lamp
In Western Europe, the Pleiades are often associated with the Seven Sisters of Irish, Scottish, and English folklore. The various tales of the Pleiades and their consistent characterization as seven siblings have inspired poets, playwrights, and creatives for centuries. During the renaissance, Agrippa and his contemporaries spoke of the fifteen Behenian Fixed Stars in reference to Hermes Trismegistus and his prescriptions of various stones and herbs in relation to these fifteen stars. Alcyone, the indicator star of the Pleiades star cluster, is thus associated with Quartz, Fennel, and liquid Mercury. He claims that "Fennel seed with frankincense and quicksilver placed under a crystal with the appropriate character [engraved on it], with the Moon conjunct the Pleiades rising or at midheaven, preserves the eyesight, summons demons and the spirits of the dead, calls the winds, and reveals secrets and things that are lost," which has made their talisman a popular tool for witches and magicians alike.
These Fixed Star Alcyone Oil Lamps were designed based on traditional Korean oil lamps, and feature a simple body with a stopper through which a wick may be threaded. Their exterior is left unglazed — raw and unpolished — to feature the beauty of the speckled stoneware used in their creation. The interior is glazed to contain the oil without leakage. Each lamp features the sigil of Alcyone as provided in the Bodleian manuscript. Each Fixed Star Alcyone Lamp was consecrated and blessed by fumigation, washing, and anointing after being fired during a Lunar conjunction with the Pleiades. This makes of them veritable talismans of the Pleiades, fit for use in ritual or as a gorgeous altar piece.
Instructions are provided with these lamps to fashion them into a vessel of power in which the spirits of the Pleiades may reside. These are the same instructions provided for our Altar Vessel of the Seven Sisters.
