The Seven Sisters; Fixed Star Alcyone

The Seven Sisters, the Sieve, the Lost Boys, the Cows, the Chicks, Wives of Volos, Subaru, the Weavers — by whichever name you may know them, the Pleiades star cluster is one of the most revered asterisms since time immemorial. Myth and legend is born from these stars the same as abundant nectar flows from Milkweed flowers.

Greek myth makes of these stars the daughters of Atlas and Pleione, born of the union of He Who Holds the Earth and Daughter of the Ocean. Hermes himself is said to be the son of Maia, nurturer, first of the seven sisters. She is followed by Electra, amber; Taygete, companion of Artemis; Alcyone, kingfisher; Celaeno, the dark one; Sterope, lightning; and Merope, the lost one. Once beautiful nymphs, the sisters eventually took their own lives due to grief, and were immortalized as stars by Zeus.

In various Indigenous tales from my neck of the woods, the Pleaides were seven brothers, called the Lost Boys, who had to fend for themselves by stealing and playing tricks. They were eventually taken in by wolves and clothed in skins and whatever the wolves could muster, and taught to hunt, gather, and survive. Eventually, wanting peace, the boys turned to the Sun Man, and begged to be allowed to play in the heavens for eternity. Their wish was granted but, depending on the tale, the youngest was late to the event, or had his foot stuck in a root at the moment when they were made light enough to reach the stars. Six of the brothers made it, and were immortalized as the Pleiades star cluster, whilst one remained on earth and became the Pine tree, forever reaching higher and higher to hopefully, one day, reach his brothers. In related tales, the brothers were all turned into Pine trees, and that is the reason for which the Pine shines so brightly in the Winter, as the Pleiades shine in the sky.

In Eastern Europe, the Pleiades are often known as chicks or cows, and sometimes as the wives of Volos, god of the underworld. Or, yet again, as seven entrances to the underworld. This weaves some interesting motifs into the broader lore of the Pleiades, associating them with the Dead and the ancestral realms, thus placing them on the side of the antagonist in the constant battle between Perun, god of skies and thunder, and Volos, god of water and of the underworld.

In Western Europe, the Pleiades are often associated with the Seven Sisters of Irish, Scottish, and English folklore. The various tales of the Pleiades and their consistent characterization as seven siblings have inspired poets, playwrights, and creatives for centuries. During the renaissance, Agrippa and his contemporaries spoke of the fifteen Behenian Fixed Stars in reference to Hermes Trismegistus and his prescriptions of various stones and herbs in relation to these fifteen stars. Alcyone, the indicator star of the Pleiades star cluster, is thus associated with Quartz, Fennel, and liquid Mercury. He claims that "Fennel seed with frankincense and quicksilver placed under a crystal with the appropriate character [engraved on it], with the Moon conjunct the Pleiades rising or at midheaven, preserves the eyesight, summons demons and the spirits of the dead, calls the winds, and reveals secrets and things that are lost," which has made their talisman a popular tool for witches and magicians alike.

In my personal work, the Pleiades are a source of power and of knowledge, to which I owe much of my witching prowess. Born as they walked the earth and met the horizon, they have been instrumental in the development of various pacts and techniques which allow me to navigate the world of spirits. The Pleiades play an important role in all work I do, but especially when it comes to my work with the Dead, both mundane and enchanted, whether that is for the sake of enacting change, or for purposes of divination. The spirit of the Lunar Mansion belonging to the Pleiades, Amixiel, is worked with for the purpose of bringing blessings of every kind, whether it be for love, for finances, for health, or for obtaining the material object of my desire. The angel of the Pleiades according to the Papyri Graecae Magicae, Zizaubio, is worked with when it comes to matters of divination, dream incubation, revealing hidden things, and making the Dead to speak. The Pleiades also make their way into my work with Hekate, and especially with the Sirens who answer her call, and weave themselves into various ancestral witchcrafts which I continue to develop and cultivate. Of course, they are also an important part of my private work with the Good Neighbors, with whom they are most often associated here in the modern witchcraft community.

These stars are a font of power from which we may draw knowledge of the world, mundane or magical, with whom we may form alliances for the sake of knowledge and material needs, to facilitate spirits pacts, to enjoy more efficacy in our conjuring of the Dead and of all other spirits, and to further develop our skills in divination and mediumship. They may deepen our connection with the spirits of the stars as a whole, acting as intercessors between ourselves and the various asterisms which populate the spirit world. They may also enable our connection with the waters and the oceans. Our relationship with the Good Neighbors can be deepened and made safer by their presence. They may fetch for us money, books, love, specific people, or — indeed — spirits, by sending forth angels and imps alike.

Each of the seven offerings which make up this collection serves to call upon the Pleiades in their various manifestations, whether it be for the sake of devotion, sorcerous praxis, fetching blessings and spirits, conjuring the Dead to send them forth or make them to speak, revealing hidden treasures and knowledge, and generally bolstering one's magical practice. These offerings were developed from my own experience working with these stars, and were designed through spirit congress to provide you with bespoke tools to introduce the Seven Sisters into your practice, or further your work with them. Each comes with its set of instructions, prayers, and rituals to provide you the means of activating and connecting with these tools so that you may then delve into what your own relationship with these stars may provide.

Each item here was crafted according to proper astrological timing. The oil was crafted from plant materia collected on the date of the heliacal setting of the Pleiades star cluster, to which it was presented as the Sun set. The bulk of the collection was presented to the Pleiades on the day of their heliacal rise, on June 18th. The various vessels and lamps of this collection were crafted during the heliacal rising season, fired when the Moon was conjunct the Pleiades, and blessed whilst she was applying a trine aspect to the same. Each item was ritually empowered by my own hand in the ways acquired through my personal witchcraft, fueled by the Pleiades. Offerings of smoke, liquor, prayer, and blood were given to the stars and to the items within this collection to consecrate and animate them and to bind the spirits to them.

Those who wish to call on the Pleiades for material gain may favor the Seven Brothers Fetching Charm or Lady of the Three Lamps Saucer. Those who wish to make the Dead speak, or to enhance their skills of divination, may prefer the Fixed Star Alcyone Oil Lamp or Lady of Seven Lamps Vessel. Those who would incorporate the Pleiades and their spirits in more sorcerous modalities may find themselves drawn to the Seven Sister; Fixed Star Alcyone Ritual Oil, Fixed Star Alcyone Fixing Powder, or Fixed Star Alcyone Beeswax Tapers. Those who would create a long-lasting relationship with the Seven Sisters and their spirits may wish to enshrine them in an Altar Vessel of the Pleiades.

Each tool is a true talisman of Fixed Star Alcyone and the whole of the collection may be used to the simple ends described by Hermes Trismegistus, but I recommend you to read between the lines, to explore myth and spirit, and to think as a witch when perusing the listings for each item.

May the Seven Sisters forever guide us.
